Choosing a Material

There isn’t one right answer, because each material looks and feels a little different. A few things to think about:

  • The look you like: bright silver, a softer silver tone, gold color or clear.
  • The weight you prefer: titanium alloy usually feels lighter than stainless steel.
  • The style of piece: some styles are only made in certain materials.

Some people are more sensitive to certain metals than others. If you know a particular metal doesn’t suit you, check the material on the product page before you buy. If you’re not sure, your piercer can suggest options. There’s more on this in the note on metal sensitivity below.

A Note on Metal Sensitivity

Some people are sensitive or allergic to certain metals, and what affects one person may not affect another. We can’t predict how any one person will respond to a material, and nothing on this site is medical advice.

  • Stainless steel may contain nickel.
  • Titanium alloys are made from titanium combined with other metals.

If you have a known metal allergy or sensitivity, check the material on the product page before you order, and speak with your piercer or a healthcare professional if you’re unsure. If a piece feels uncomfortable when you wear it, you may want to take it out.

Cleaning and Storing

These tips are about the jewelry itself. A few simple habits help pieces keep their look.

Wipe

After wearing, wipe the piece gently with a soft, clean cloth to remove makeup, lotion and dust. For a deeper clean, use a soft cloth lightly dampened with mild soap and water, then wipe with a clean damp cloth. It's best to avoid soaking or scrubbing around stones.

Dry

Dry the piece completely before you put it away.

Store apart

Keep pieces separate, in a pouch, box or compartment, so they don't scratch each other or tangle. Glass pieces need extra care, as they may chip or break.

There’s no fixed schedule. A gentle wipe after wearing is an easy habit, and a deeper clean whenever a piece looks dull or has picked up makeup, lotion or dust.

Many people take jewelry off before swimming or using strong cleaning products. It’s a simple way to help pieces keep their look, especially pieces with a colored finish.

Colored finishes, such as gold color, can wear gradually with friction, cleaning and contact with products. Wipe gently, store pieces apart, and it’s best to avoid abrasive cloths.
